About Heber E. Dunaway, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.O.G.


Dr. Herber E. Dunaway, Jr., has been a doctor with The Fertility Institute since 1984. He is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and has worked as a reproductive endocrinologist for over 37 years. Dr. Dunaway treats all aspects of infertility, including diminished ovarian reserve and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). He specializes in treatment options ranging from ovulation induction and intrauterine insemination (IUI) to in vitro fertilization (IVF) with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

Dr. Dunaway has special interests in robotic surgery for endometriosis, uterine fibroids, pelvic adhesions, and tubal disease, as well as corrective surgery for uterine anomalies. He has a keen interest in the refinement of the surgical treatment of endometriosis by robotics as well as the treatment of uterine fibroids.

Dr. Dunaway received his medical training at Louisiana State University Medical School, where he also completed his ObGyn residency. He furthered his training with a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Today, he is a member of several medical organizations, including the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Society of Assisted Reproductive Technologists. He is also a Clinical Associate Professor of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at LSU Health School of Medicine New Orleans.

Dr. Dunaway has won several awards for his medical practice, including:

Dr. Dunaway believes in a compassionate and aggressive treatment approach. He employs kindness and understanding with every patient he sees and works to help them achieve their fertility goals. He loves to hear from his patients after they’ve left his care.

Achieving Firsts

Dr. Dunaway has been a force in the field of reproductive endocrinology and infertility. He was the director and founder of Reproductive Services for Lakeside Hospital and completed several of The Fertility Institute’s firsts, like:

  • He performed the first successful gamete fallopian transfer in Louisiana.
  • The first operative hysteroscopic uterine septoplasty.
  • The first successful donor embryo transfer.

He was also a forerunner of direct oocyte sperm transfer (DOST) by being one of the first few individuals to achieve pregnancy by this method.
