Intrauterine insemination
IUI vs. IVF
For hopeful parents-to-be who are struggling to or are unable to conceive on their own, fertility treatments can help you achieve your dream of having a baby. At the Fertility Institute, we specialize in a range of fertility treatments, including intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF).
The right treatment for you will depend on your health, fertility, personal circumstances, and family-growing goals. Our specialists are here to guide you on your fertility journey and help recommend personalized treatments.
About Us
IUI vs IVF: What’s the Difference?
IUI and IVF are both common methods of assisted reproduction that our fertility specialists may recommend. By using certain fertility medications and procedures to facilitate the steps of reproduction, we can increase the chances of pregnancy.
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
During IUI, a sample of concentrated sperm is inserted into the uterus. This is done using a catheter, which allows our specialists to bypass the cervix and give sperm a more direct path to the fallopian tubes. By concentrating sperm from your partner or a donor beforehand, we can remove non-motile sperm and ensure that the healthiest sample is used. An IUI can be performed with or without fertility medications to encourage ovulation. A pregnancy test will be administered around two weeks afterward to confirm the result of your IUI.
What is IUI?
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
The IVF process involves significantly more steps compared to IUI, as this method of assisted fertilization takes place outside of the body. Before an egg is fertilized with sperm in our IVF laboratory, we stimulate the ovaries to increase egg production through self-administered hormone injections. This allows our specialists to retrieve a number of mature eggs and fertilize them with sperm. After embryos have developed in our IVF lab for five days, the healthiest one will be transferred back into the uterus for implantation.

IUI vs IVF: Which is Right for Me?
Your fertility journey is an extremely personal experience that is individualized to you. Both IUI and IVF can help couples, single individuals, and LGBTQ+ individuals have a baby. As you begin treatment with us, we take the time to truly listen and understand your health and goals.
Fertility Treatments and Infertility
As part of your fertility journey, our specialists will recommend fertility testing to uncover any hormonal, structural, or unexplained causes of infertility. This will affect your treatment plan. For example, couples who experience male infertility may benefit from IUI, while IVF may suit females with a low egg count.

LGBTQ+ Family Building
At the Fertility Institute, we are proud to welcome LGBTQ+ couples and individuals. IUI and IVF can help same-sex female couples become pregnant using donor sperm. Our specialists are here to discuss options for growing your family, as well as any legal considerations when using a donor.
