When Should I See a Fertility Specialist?

Fertility treatments can feel like a last resort for those who want to have a baby. The stressors present when trying to conceive can make it difficult to know the best time to see a fertility specialist. The Fertility Institute is here to support all couples and individuals on their unique paths to parenthood. For most of our patients, the first consultation is a crucial part of your fertility journey, providing an opportunity to meet with our experienced team and understand what lies ahead for your treatment.

Meeting With a Fertility Specialist

For both women and men, certain physical and familial factors can affect your fertility. We recommend that you meet with a fertility specialist and discuss a fertility treatment plan if:

  • You are a woman under 35 who has been unable to conceive after one year of trying.
  • You are a woman 35 or older who has been unable to conceive after six months of trying.
  • You are a woman over 40 who has been unable to conceive after three months of trying.
  • You are a woman with known reproductive disorders, such as endometriosis or fibroids.
  • You are a woman who has experienced recurrent miscarriages.
  • You are a man with male factor infertility, such as low sperm count.
  • You have a known family history of infertility.
  • You have a known genetic condition that you do not want to pass onto your future children.

When Should I Be Tested for Infertility?

In addition to creating a fertility treatment plan, our fertility specialists can recommend fertility testing to evaluate your chances of conceiving. We recommended fertility testing for anyone with a known or suspected condition that may affect fertility, along with those who have a family history of infertility.

The Benefit of Testing Early

Fertility testing can be beneficial to all couples and individuals who are interested in having children. The earlier you and your partner test, the better understanding you have of your ability to conceive. This also allows you to start fertility treatment early, helping you to achieve your family goals sooner. If our specialists uncover any structural causes of infertility, we may be able to schedule a surgery to correct it.
