PGT-A
Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy (PGT-A) is a type of preimplantation genetic testing that evaluates the embryo’s chromosomes. Aneuploidy describes the condition in which an embryo has more or less than the proper number of chromosomes. Human embryos should have 23 pairs, or 46 chromosomes.
Aneuploidy is a major genetic cause of embryo implantation failure—meaning it may not result in a pregnancy—miscarriage, conditions such as Down’s syndrome or Turner’s syndrome, or birth defects or disorders. The chances of having chromosomally abnormal embryos increases with maternal (female) age.
Our fertility specialists recommend PGT-A testing to many of our patients who undergo IVF, especially those who are above the age of 35 or who have experienced recurrent miscarriages. While this is not diagnostic testing, PGT-A can help us better understand the embryo’s health and allow us to select and transfer embryos without chromosomal abnormalities, which improves the chances of them resulting in a pregnancy.
