Intrauterine insemination

IUI near Me

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is an assisted reproductive technology treatment that involves injecting a sperm sample directly into the uterus and is an available option for those who want to grow their family. The Fertility Institute of New Orleans offers IUI as a fertility treatment at our locations around Metairie, Baton Rouge, and Mandeville, Louisiana.

What is Intrauterine Insemination?

IUI is a fertility treatment commonly recommended before attempting other treatment options, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). It is a treatment that can help with male infertility because it gives sperm a better chance of reaching the egg.

A sperm sample is provided by a donor or partner and given to one of our fertility specialists. It will then be concentrated in a lab so that only the healthiest, highly mobile sperm are used during the IUI procedure. The highly concentrated sperm is then inserted into the uterus using a flexible catheter, placing it closer to the egg for fertilization.

How Does IUI Work?

The IUI process begins with a fertility assessment for both partners. The fertility assessment identifies potential causes of infertility that can make it more difficult for you to grow your family. Then, your provider will create a personalized fertility treatment, which may include IUI.

Some women require a round of fertility medication treatments to stimulate the ovarian follicles and develop one or more mature eggs. With or without ovulation-inducing medications, the insemination will be scheduled close to ovulation.

The IUI procedure can be completed in our offices. On the day of the insemination, a donor or your partner will provide a sperm sample. That sample will be concentrated in our state-of-the-art lab.

The insemination procedure only takes about ten to fifteen minutes. Your fertility specialist will insert a flexible catheter through your cervix and into your uterus, and sperm will be injected. The sperm can then easily access the matured eggs for fertilization. About two weeks after insemination, your fertility specialist will administer a pregnancy test to confirm a potential pregnancy.

Who Is a Good Candidate for IUI?

Your fertility specialist will help you determine if you and your partner are good candidates for IUI. Candidates for IUI include:

  • LGBTQ+ couples use IUI with donor sperm to grow their families
  • Couples with male infertility due to low sperm count or motility
  • Men with erectile dysfunction or ejaculation disorders
  • Couples with unexplained infertility
  • Women with mild to moderate endometriosis
  • Women with cervical mucus problems, cervical stenosis, or other abnormalities
  • Women who do not ovulate regularly

You and your partner will undergo a fertility assessment to determine the cause of your infertility and provide your fertility specialist with information to create a personalized fertility treatment plan.
