What is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is one of the first assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment options recommended to those in need of fertility treatment before options such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). This treatment option increases the likelihood of the sperm reaching the egg for fertilization.

A partner or a sperm donor will give our fertility specialists a sample of sperm. Our fertility specialists will only select the healthiest sperm for insemination during the IUI procedure. This highly concentrated and curated sample is then inserted into the uterus using a thin, flexible catheter. Since the sperm is placed inside the uterus, it has less distance to cover before fertilizing the egg and is one reason why IUI can be an effective fertility treatment.

Is IUI Right for Me?

If you’re unsure if IUI may be the right fertility treatment for you, your fertility specialist can help. They will determine, based on your fertility assessment, if IUI is the right option for you and your partner, if you have one. A fertility assessment includes a physical exam, blood work, a medical and family history review, and more, which your fertility specialist will use to create a personalized treatment plan.

Many people find IUI helpful in growing their families, including:

  • Women with mild to moderate endometriosis
  • Women with cervical mucus problems, cervical stenosis, or other abnormalities
  • Women who do not ovulate regularly
  • Couples with unexplained infertility
  • Couples with male infertility due to low sperm count or motility
  • Men with erectile dysfunction or other ejaculation disorders
  • LGBTQ+ couples who use IUI with donor sperm to grow their families
  • Individuals building their families on their own

Your fertility specialist is here to guide you through the fertility assessment and treatment process.

The IUI Process

When the fertility assessment process is complete, your fertility specialist may recommend IUI. For some women, the IUI process may begin with a round of fertility medication. The fertility medication is designed to stimulate the follicles of the ovaries in order to develop mature eggs. Your fertility specialist may also recommend ovulation-inducing medication depending on your specific needs. Insemination will be scheduled close to ovulation, which can be tracked by your fertility specialist.

The IUI procedure can be completed in our offices. On the day of insemination, a donor or partner will provide their sperm sample. That sample will be concentrated into the highest quality semen in our lab.

The IUI process takes about ten to fifteen minutes in total. Your fertility specialist will be there with you every step of the way. They will guide a flexible catheter into your uterus and inject the sperm inside. Two weeks after insemination, your specialist will administer a fertility test to confirm a potential pregnancy.
