Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a procedure during which concentrated sperm is directly inserted into the uterus using a catheter. The purpose of this procedure is to bypass the steps of natural reproduction and help sperm reach the fallopian tubes to fertilize an egg and create a pregnancy.

What is IUI?

IUI and in vitro fertilization (IVF) are two common fertility treatments available at the Fertility Institute. For many of our hopeful parents-to-be, IUI is a great first treatment. Compared to IVF, IUI is less invasive and may require less of a time commitment from our patients. The right treatment for you will depend on your personal health, family goals, and fertility status.

IUI vs IVF

IUI is commonly used as a treatment for low sperm count or mobility in male partners. We may also recommend this treatment to those who are experiencing unexplained forms of infertility, LGBTQ+ individuals, or those who wish to be single parents by choice.

Am I a Candidate?

The process of IUI is, most importantly, about timing the procedure with ovulation. Because sperm is inserted directly into the uterus, there needs to be a mature egg ready to be fertilized in the fallopian tubes. We may administer fertility medications to induce ovulation, and before the procedure, we concentrate healthy sperm from the sample given. The procedure itself is short, minimally invasive, and can be done in-office. Our specialists will be able to recommend when to take a pregnancy test.
