Our fertility specialists explain all the testing steps and discuss results to help you understand possible paths forward. Every patient is unique, with an individual journey to parenthood that may involve simpler treatments or assisted reproductive procedures. There is no one right way to have a child.
When Should I Get Tested For Infertility?
There are two key factors that impact when you should get tested for infertility: age and medical history. However, if you’re unsure, your fertility specialist can advise you and your partner if it is time to undergo a fertility assessment.
Age
Age is an important factor for women who may be considering getting tested for infertility:
- Women who are under the age of 35 should consider fertility testing after trying to conceive for a year.
- If you are 35 or older, you should consider fertility testing after trying for six months.
- Women over 40 should consider fertility testing after 3 months of trying to conceive.
While age is primarily a factor for women, men and women should get tested when there is difficulty conceiving.
Medical History
Medical and family history can play an important role in determining the cause of infertility. Family history tells your fertility specialist if infertility runs in your family and if there is a genetic cause of your infertility. This information should be given to your fertility specialist prior to your first appointment so we can make your first appointment as productive as possible. If you are a couple trying to have a child, your partner should provide their medical and family history as well.
Some medical conditions can contribute to infertility. Symptoms like pelvic pain and irregular menstrual cycles can point to a condition like PCOS that can make it more difficult to conceive. If you or your partner have had pelvic or testicular surgery, this can also impact fertility.
Many causes of infertility in men don’t have easy-to-identify symptoms. Testing early can uncover potential causes of infertility, and your fertility specialist can provide treatment to help you achieve your family-building goals sooner, saving you time and heartache in the long run.
