Whether you’re approaching parenthood by yourself or interested in growing your family with a partner, testing can provide pertinent information about your fertility health that can help you have a successful pregnancy.

Should I Get Tested?

Couples should see a fertility specialist if they have been trying to conceive for a year. This can indicate that you or your partner may be experiencing infertility. Both partners need to be tested to determine all potential causes for your infertility.

If you are a woman 35 years old or older, we recommend seeking out testing after six months of trying to conceive. Women over 40 should receive testing after three months of trying to conceive.

When Should I See a Fertility Specialist?

Testing for women involves imaging, blood tests, and urine tests. These tests can help give your fertility specialist a look at your hormone levels, whether or not you ovulate, or if you have a condition or any structural abnormalities that may be affecting your fertility.

Fertility Testing for Women

Fertility testing for men generally includes a physical exam, blood tests, and a semen analysis. The blood tests allow your fertility specialist to determine if your hormones are at the right levels. The semen analysis provides your fertility specialist with an opportunity to assess the shape and movement of your sperm, which can affect fertility.

Fertility Testing for Men

Prior to your first visit, your specialist will request a family and medical history from you and your partner if you have one. Sending this information to your fertility specialist in advance gives them a chance to review it and make your first visit as productive as possible.

You and your partner should also take some time to review what you’ve done so far when attempting to conceive and how long you’ve been trying. This information helps your provider to understand a complete picture of your attempted conception history to develop the best path forward for testing and treatment.
