Conditions that Might Require Egg Donation
There are many reasons why a woman may not have eggs that will lead to a full-term pregnancy. Some conditions that can contribute to egg viability issues include:
- Prior radiation or chemotherapy treatments
- Previous ovarian surgery
- Genetic disorders, or a family history of genetic disorders
- Advanced maternal age
- Repeated failed IVF procedures
- Multiple miscarriages
If you are experiencing any of these conditions, you may need an egg donor to increase your chances of having a live birth.
Our Egg Donor Services
There are two different kinds of egg donor services: known and anonymous. At The Fertility Institute, we perform known egg donations in which the donor is a friend or family member of the recipient. Eggs are donated through our Egg Sharing Program, which is a process that incorporates the initial stages of IVF, including egg stimulation and egg retrieval. We also provide IVF to patients who acquire cryopreserved eggs from commercial donor egg banks.
Here are some suggestions to help with your research on egg donation, but be sure to ask questions and evaluate them to make sure you find the right fit for your needs:
What Is the Egg Donation Process?
Known egg donor candidates should be under the age of 35 and in good health. The donor should expect to spend a few weeks undergoing egg stimulation treatments, which include injectable medications that promote multiple egg maturation. The egg retrieval process itself is a very simple and minimally invasive procedure performed in our IVF suite. The patient is placed under conscious sedation while an ultrasound guides a needle through the vagina to aspirate the eggs.
