How Is My IVF Due Date Calculated?

Calculating the due date for a patient who has undergone IVF treatment is different than determining the due date of a patient who has conceived naturally. IVF patients have the benefit of knowing the exact date of both egg retrieval (which also doubles as the date of conception) and embryo transfer. Most online IVF due date calculators offer the option of determining a patient’s due date based on either of these dates. Knowing these precise dates is a unique benefit that is not available to those who are conceiving naturally, so it does allow for a more accurate due date calculation. Still, no due date is a guarantee. In fact, because a healthy, full-term pregnancy can actually happen at any time between 37 and 40 weeks, as little as 5 percent of patients actually deliver on their due date.

When a doctor is calculating a patient’s IVF due date, the initial prediction will most likely be based on the same information that is entered into an IVF due date calculator – either the date of egg retrieval or embryo transfer. However, throughout the pregnancy, a doctor will be able to make adjustments to the due date based on information that cannot be entered into an online due date calculator. Doctors will take into consideration additional factors such as measurements of the baby, the baby’s rate of development, and whether it is a single pregnancy or one involving twins or multiples. All of these factors can have a significant impact on whether a woman will deliver within the anticipated range of 37 to 40 weeks, or whether delivery is likely to come earlier. With twins and multiples in particular, birth is likely to happen earlier, with twins typically delivering around 37 weeks, and multiples delivering as early as 31 to 33 weeks. Although online IVF due date calculators can be entertaining and exciting, it is for these reasons that the information given cannot compare to that provided by a patient’s acting physician.
