Meet Dr. Richard Dickey
Richard P. Dickey, M.D., Ph.D., Founder
Dr. Richard Dickey, Medical Director and Founder of The Fertility Institute, has specialized in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility since 1965 and is recognized as one of the pioneers in the field of reproductive medicine in the United States. He is board certified in Gynecology in Obstetrics/ Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility from the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
A graduate of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Dr. Dickey completed his Ob/Gyn residency at Ohio State University Hospital. After attending one of the first training programs in the United States in reproductive endocrinology, he earned his Ph.D. for his study of the neuro hormones of reproduction.
Before founding The Fertility Clinic in 1980, Dr. Dickey served in academic medicine as the Director of Infertility and Reproductive Endocrinology at The Ohio State University School of Medicine and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Louisiana State University's School of Medicine. He currently serves as Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at both LSU and Tulane Medical Schools and as Chief of the Section of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at LSU Medical School New Orleans.
In 2014, Dr. Dickey received the distinguished Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award from the American Society of Reproductive Medicine. This award honors physicians who best demonstrate the ideals of compassionate and respectful care of a patient’s physical and emotional wellbeing. From 2010 to 2015, he earned recognition as one of Castle Connolly America's Top Doctors, awarded to specialists who are highly recommended by their peers and other healthcare professionals.
Dr Dickey achieved the first successful in vitro fertilization [IVF] in the Gulf South States in 1983 and has introduced many inovations in infertility treatment. Dr. Dickey has more than 120 peer-reviewed published articles in US and International medical journals. His special interest is the treatment of recurrent early pregnancy loss.
He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Fellow at both the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology. An active member of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, the Society of Assisted Reproductive Technology, the Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, the Pacific Coast Fertility Society and the Hormone Foundation, he is respected by his colleagues for his expertise in both clinical and academic settings.
Meet Dr. Steven Taylor
Steven N. Taylor, M.D.
Dr. Steven N. Taylor is a fertility specialist who has been practicing medicine for 42 years. He is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and specializes in Reproductive Endocrinology and Obstetrics & Gynecology. Dr. Taylor graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine where he specialized in gynecology. In 1979, he developed the fertility program at Tulane University after completing his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Taylor has accomplished many firsts in the field of field of reproductive medicine. In 2011, while teaching at the Tulane University Medical School, he was the first to develop an infertility microsurgery program. While at the Fertility Institute, Dr. Taylor was one of the first surgeons to perform laser surgery in the South.
An expert in infertility, Dr. Taylor has published articles in peer-reviewed medical journals such as the in the Fertility and Sterility journal, the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Human Reproductive Journal.
With a passion for helping families combined with his love for medicine, Dr. Taylor has devoted his medical expertise to furthering advances in reproductive health. His special interests are in in vitro fertilization and ovulation induction.
In 2012, Dr. Taylor was chosen by New Orleans Magazine as one of the New Orleans’ Best Doctors and in 2013, he was one of Castle Connolly America's Top Doctors, a distinction earned by physicians highly recommended by their peers and other healthcare professionals.

Peter Y. Lu, M.D.
Dr. Peter Lu received his Bachelor of Science in Genetics from Cornell University, a Master of Science in Physiology from Georgetown University Graduate School, and his Doctorate of Medicine from Georgetown University School of Medicine. He completed a subspecialty fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology with certification in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Dr. Lu is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Louisiana State University School of Medicine (New Orleans) where he is actively involved in the residency training program. He has published numerous articles regarding reproductive medicine in Fertility and Sterility, The American Journal of Pathology, the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Journal of Psychoneuroendocrinolgy, and Mayo Clinic Proceedings.
Dr. Lu’s 22 years of practice in Reproductive Encocrinology and Infertility have resulted in outstanding pregnancy rates by utilizing the most current and effective forms of fertility treatments. His practice is devoted solely to the treatment of infertility and he specializes in all forms of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART): In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD), frozen embryos/eggs, and elective single embryo transfers (ESET). His expertise includes the treatment of male infertility with intrauterine insemination (IUI) or when sperm must be obtained surgically by microepididymal or testicular sperm aspiration (MESA or TESA).
Renowned for his dedication and commitment to patient care, Dr. Lu has been annually selected by his peers as a “Best Doctor” in his field by New Orleans Magazine and Louisiana Life Magazine since 2009. He was profiled in the August 2010 edition of New Orleans Magazine. He has been voted a “Favorite Fertility Doctor” in Nola Baby & Family Magazine in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014. Meet Dr. Sissy Sartor, M.D.
Sissy Sartor, M.D.
Dr. Sissy Sartor is board certified in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility and has the distinction of being the first female boarded infertility specialist in the State of Louisiana. She graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine in 1981 and completed her Obstetrics and Gynecology residency in 1986. She completed a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1990 and subsequently served on the faculty at that institution. During that time she also served as a consulting gynecologist at the National Institutes of Health.
Prior to joining the Fertility Institute in 1998, she served as Director of the Section of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility in the Department of Ob/Gyn at Louisiana State University in Shreveport and helped bring advanced fertility services to North Louisiana by developing a thriving In Vitro Fertilization program and clinic (the Center for Reproductive Health and Fertility). In New Orleans, she has been actively involved in the education of LSU Ob/Gyn residents, and has held the position of Clinical Associate Professor. She has co-authored numerous articles and lectured widely.
In 2013, Dr. Sartor was featured in St. Charles Avenue Magazine as a Local Leader in Women’s Health. She has been named as one of America’s Top doctors in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015, earned by physicians highly recommended by their peers and other healthcare professionals. She was voted favorite doctor in 2011 by NOLA Baby and Family Magazine.

Heber E. Dunaway, Jr., M.D.
Dr. Heber Dunaway entered partnership with The Fertility Institute of New Orleans in 2002. Prior to joining The Fertility Institute, Dr. Dunaway was the Founder and Medical Director of the Fertility and Laser Center, the Director of Reproductive Services for Baton Rouge General and Women's Hospital and the Director of Reproductive Services for Lakeside Hospital.
A graduate of Louisiana State University School of Medicine, Dr. Dunaway obtained accredited fellowship training at Reproductive Endocrinology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He is board certified in Obstetrics/ Gynecology and has published numerous articles in Fertility and Sterility Journal, the Journal of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology, The American Journal of the Roentgenology and the Journal of Chromatography.
Dr. Dunaway has accomplished numerous breakthroughs in his 37 years as a reproductive medicine specialist including the first successful gamete fallopian transfer in Louisiana in the mid-1980s, the first operative hysteroscopic uterine septoplasty and first successful donor embryo transfer. He distinguished himself by being one of only two individuals to achieve pregnancies by Direct Oocyte Sperm Transfer (DOST).
Well versed in current technologies, Dr. Dunaway’s employs leading-edge therapies with emphasis on the diagnosis and treatment of Polyscystic Ovary Syndrome, infertility treatment through assisted reproductive technology, surgical and medical management of endometriosis, and the surgical management of uterine anomalies.
He has been recognized by his patients for his individual attention and compassion and has earned Vitals’ Patients' Choice Award (2008 - 2012, 2014) and Patients' Choice 5th Anniversary Award (2012) and the Compassionate Doctor Recognition Award (2011).

Phillip H. Rye, M.D., MPH
Before joining The Fertility Institute in 2000, Dr. Philip Rye served in academic medicine for over 30 years. A former member of the faculty of Louisiana State University School of Medicine, Dr. Rye is board certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology from the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Rye graduated from Louisiana State University’s School of Medicine in 1965. He completed his internship at the United States Public Health Service Hospital and his residency at LSU while specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Several years later he earned a Master’s Degree in Public Health and Tropical Medicine from Tulane University.
Currently serving on the clinical faculty at Tulane University School of Medicine, Dr. Rye’s interests include menopause and nutrition.
Respected by his colleagues for his expertise in clinical and academic settings, Dr. Rye is also recognized for the individualized attention he provides his patients. In 2007, Dr. Rye was chosen by New Orleans Magazine as one of the New Orleans’ Top Doctors.

William J. Farrell, M.D.
Dr. William Farrell has 41 years of experience as a reproductive medicine specialist and is board certified in Obstetrics/ Gynecology. Before joining the Fertility Institute of New Orleans in 2005, he served as Chief of the Medical Staff as well as Chief of the OB/GYN section at Lakeland Medical Center.
A graduate of Louisiana State University School of Medicine, Dr. Farrell completed his internship at Ochsner Hospital and his residency at LSU/Charity Hospital. In 1978, he opened a private medical practice in New Orleans East where he specialized in Obstetrics/Gynecology.
Dr. Farrell has earned a reputation for his expertise in menopause and gynecology. He has extensively studied the genetic abnormalities that affect the ovaries that may result in premature menopause, premature ovarian failure (POF) and primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) and has established practices that combine individual success rates with sensitive fertility care.
In 2011, Dr. Farrell was awarded Vital’s Patient’s Choice Award and the Compassionate Doctor Award, both reflecting the difference a physician has made in the lives of their patients. He continues to be passionate about offering his patients the most advanced infertility technology available for the highest possibility of pregnancy and parenthood.
He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and an active member of the Greater New Orleans OB/GYN Society, Louisiana State Medical Association and the Orleans Parish Medical Society.
