Here at The Fertility Institute, we offer a whole host of treatments that can help patients in the New Orleans area start the family of their dreams. By offering different fertility treatment options, we can help ensure successful pregnancy and address various kinds of infertility causes.
A number of patients have asked about intrauterine insemination (IUI) and what it entails. We’d like to go over the basics of this artificial insemination method right now.
The Initial Consultation to Determine Candidacy
The first step of IUI treatment is determining if IUI will be ideal for you. During this initial consultation, your fertility specialist will discuss the cause of the infertility, your age and viability for treatment, and may also propose alternatives that may help you become pregnant. After weighing all of your options, it may be determined that IUI is the right way to achieve your goals.
Washing the Sperm Prior to Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
A process known as sperm washing or swim down helps increase the potential success of IUI.
Once a sperm sample has been taken from your partner or a sperm donor has been selected, the sperm is carefully purified and concentrated, allowing the high-quality sperm to be used rather than low-quality sperm.
Monitoring Ovulation to Determine Optimal Timing
Before the actual IUI process takes place, it’s important for women to take note of their cycle and determine when they ovulate. A kit may be used to help determine when you are most fertile during the month. Fertility drugs may also be considered as needed in order to promote ovulation and/or cause the release of more than one egg.
In most cases, the IUI treatment is performed after ovulation has occurred. Proper timing can enhance the success of the treatment.
The Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) Procedure
The actual IUI process is performed at the fertility clinic and generally only requires about 15 to 20 minutes.
While lying down on an examination table, the patient will place her legs in stirrups and the fertility specialist will place a speculum into the vagina. A catheter will be inserted into the vagina and through the cervix into the woman’s uterus. Attached to the other end of this catheter will be a vial that contains the washed sperm. The sperm is then pushed through the catheter into the woman’s uterus, after which the catheter is removed.
What to Expect After Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
Patients will generally be able to return to normal daily activities soon after the IUI procedure is completed. Light spotting may occur for a day or two after IUI, which is normal.
When will I notice results from intrauterine insemination (IUI) treatment?
Generally you’ll find out the results of IUI treatment in two weeks. That’s when you can take an at-home pregnancy test to see if you are pregnant. You will want to undergo a blood test with your doctor within 24 hrs after IUI to officially confirm if you are pregnant.
If the first IUI attempt was unsuccessful, it is possible to try again and achieve pregnancy on the second attempt. Negative results after the second IUI attempt will open the door for other fertility treatments to be attempted.
