Many couples and individuals who are unable to conceive naturally become frustrated with their circumstances. Some patients will go to reproductive medicine experts, like the team here at The Fertility Institute. Others may turn to alternative medicine or junk medicine. We understand why that is the case given how enriching it can be to start a family of your own. However, we believe that patients in the greater New Orleans area should turn to people who actually know about medicine and reproductive health rather than anyone making claims that cannot be backed up by research.
In essence, we’re saying that proven fertility treatments such as in vitro fertiliization (IVF) are reliable and very effective whereas alternative therapies are often accidentally successful and built on pseudoscience and superstition. With that in mind, we want to consider whether or not acupuncture has any effect on fertility or the success of medical treatments that address infertility.
Does acupuncture improve fertility or in vitro fertilization (IVF) success?
Oddly, the answer is a “maybe” or “not necessarily”.
Regardless what acupunturists and proponents for alternative medicine say, there is no significant evidence that acupuncture will improve fertility or increase the success of fertility treatments such as IVF. Some studies find that chances do improve for some people, but the results and measures tend to swing both ways.
Why is the answer a big fat “maybe”?
Acupuncture has unique properties in terms of promoting a sense of relaxation and positive thinking. Sometimes stress relief and a positive attitude can improve a patient’s overall sense of wellness and hence the chances of becoming pregnant.
While that seems like a mild yes about improving fertility, keep in mind that the studies have shown that the rate of increase is not especially high. Furthermore, the sense of well-being and relaxation caused by the acupuncture is not related to specious claims about energy levels and qi as some acupuncturists claim.
If anything, you can choose to undergo acupuncture given its potentially positive effects on relaxation and wellness. There are very few if any negative side effects from acupuncture and the sessions are generally inexpensive. Just keep in mind that the results are more psychosomatic than physiological.
Actual Ways to Improve Fertility and the Success of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
When it comes to actually improving fertility, there are a number of things that patients can consider other than pseudoscientific measures such as acupuncture. This includes losing weight, eating healthy, exercising regularly, and eating a well-balanced diet rich in nutrients and with plenty of fruits and vegetables. These are all means of achieving total wellness as well as a positive and relaxed mental outlook.
